Patient Retention

Retention of patients that have enrolled into a study is critical to the success of the study. When patients are lost to follow up or are non-compliant, new patients are needed and time is lost. Much of the retention and compliance responsibility falls on the study coordinator, who typically doesn’t have the time to deal with such details. Reminder calls and compliance communications are typically done in the evening from their home, if they have the time.

Challenges with retaining patients include:

  • Keeping patients compliant with such activities as completing diaries/ePROs, taking medicine etc.
  • Making sure the patient/caregiver feels part of something important
  • Remembering their schedule visit days
  • The expense and time of having to recruit replacement patients of those who drop out
